Manchester School of Architecture Portfolio: Essay

I have chosen this course because I had the most experience in construction and painting of structures. Every day a modern and inspiring structure is being added to the Doha skyline and I want to add more skyscrapers and buildings for this country; hopefully around the world as well. Therefore, I need a university like Manchester School of Architecture to help me achieve this. Manchester School of Architecture can satisfy and expand my imagination and will help me experience a more developed approach to building structures. It will also help me express the way I would like to design buildings based on their surroundings and I will hopefully become familiar with the architectural technology used in modern day engineering. It will also help me gain the confidence, experience and the knowledge I need to have in order to become a successful architect.

I have visited many places in Qatar and the most interesting was the Museum of Islamic Arts, designed by an architect named Ieoh Ming Pei. The Museum of Islamic Arts is now one of the most visited museums in Qatar because of its distinct ‘edgy’ and sandy exterior which links outstandingly with the desert environment, its luxurious and spatial interior and cost-effective quantities of artifacts as well as sculptures of ancient Islam. There is a combination between traditional and modern architecture which gives the impression of an integrated structure.

My favourite types of architecture are modern architecture and organic architecture. Frank Lloyd Wright ,the person that displays both in his work, is a great architect and my role model. He designed hundreds of houses throughout his long and distinguished career and has inspired me through his work to progress in architecture and motivated me to begin this career in architecture. My favourite building is also one of his innovations, the Falling Water. It combined many different aspects of organic architecture, for example, the walls and floor which are made of uneven stone left in its natural state, which made it seem as though the house grew out of the landscape around it. This is one of the buildings I would dream to see up close, learn from, and experience in reality or even create something like it or better.
Studying in Manchester will strengthen my job opportunities and will enable me to discover cutting edge architecture. I look forward to create and conceive buildings at your university. This is one of my main reasons to join this university at Manchester.
